I never found a solution - would be great if you find something!

I found a solution

1: Create a new database.
2. install the phpbb forum latest version using the new database in a new folder: https://www.phpbb.com/downloads/?sid=06 ... 0bd44cf472
3. download each table from each database in 2 different folders.
4. Upload the old tables to the new database: phpbb_bot, phpbb_users, phpbb_forums, phpbb_smilies, phpbb_topics, phpbb_posts, phpbb_privmsgs, phpbb_rules, phpbb_folders, phpbb_bbcodes, forum_track, phpbb_icons, phpbb_ranks (you do not need the other ones). One by one and check if it works here: https://validator.w3.org/. If it does not work, you can move back and download the new table.
5.Copy the image folder to the new folder.
6. Update thephpbb_ config table in the new database: Avatar_salt, Script_path, Cookie_name with the value of the old database.
7. change the new folder name to the old folder name.

and that's it
